Waikato Project Spotlight
The Waikato is emerging as an economic powerhouse for New Zealand with massive development spurred on by its location and easy access to major population centres and ports.
We’re proud to say that since 2020, Hanham & Philp has been an integral part of this development, with numerous exciting projects under our belt already.
“The GEA and Atkore projects in Hamilton and the Cyclotek Physics Laboratory in Auckland are the latest in a series of 15 industrial developments I’ve done with Hanham & Philp over the past 23 years. Most of the projects have been complex Industrial buildings. I keep working with them because they’re good people and their books are completely transparent.” – Barry Wither Wither Property
GEA Farm Technologies, Horotiu
GEA Farm Technologies is a world leader in high-quality milk production and livestock systems and management tools. Negotiating an extended Covid lockdown, Simon led the Hanham & Philp Waikato team and contractors on the build of GEA’s flagship 800m2 two-storey office and 3,000m2 warehouse premises at Northgate, Horotiu.

Atkore Unistrut, Horotiu
Unistrut is the original weldless metal framing system. Their new manufacturing and distribution facility, which incorporates a 302 m2 office, 1182m2 canopy and 6012m2 warehouse, will increase their ability to serve the construction industry throughout New Zealand. For added sustainability, it uses roof water for the toilet flushing, irrigation and garden sprinklers.
“Working with Hanham & Philp throughout the construction of our new purpose-built facility in Horotiu was a smooth and well-managed experience. From the initial groundworks through to the final colour selections, their clear communication and strong coordination made us feel like part of the team at every stage.
The project was delivered to a high standard, and the finished result exceeded our expectations. It not only meets our operational needs perfectly, but our involvement in the process has made it a place we genuinely enjoy coming to each day.
I would highly recommend the H&P team to anyone considering a build.”

Action Manufacturing, Avalon
Action Manufacturing, which is part of the Tourism Holdings Group, is Australasia’s leading vehicle re-engineering specialist. In this major refit of their existing facility, we added a new driveway and concrete front yard with six new roller doors for the manufacturing warehouse.
We also completed a comprehensive retrofit, which included the installation of a fire sprinkler system, full seismic strengthening to meet current earthquake standards, and the integration of gantry cranes into the structure.

Cyclotek, Auckland
Cyclotek is a radiopharmaceutical laboratory that produces short-lived radioactive tracers used in PET imaging, and other radioactive materials needed for diagnostic scans and therapeutic research, particularly in oncology and neurology.
Simon led this highly complex retrofit and upgrade project at the most advanced laboratory of its type in the country. It involved close coordination with an overseas-based client and subcontractors from Sweden and Australia, all of which required clear communication across time zones, and strict compliance with specialised operational, safety, and regulatory requirements.
The retrofit was a mammoth task. We took the roof off the building to pour the cyclotron vault walls, which are 700mm thick and three metres high. 90m3 of concrete was poured over 10 hrs. Following that, we lifted the cyclotron and its auxiliary components, which altogether weigh 70 tonnes, onto a 600 mm deep reinforced concrete base. Even before we commenced the retrofit work, we needed to install a new sprinkler system and carry out full seismic strengthening of the existing structure.
“Working for Hanham & Philp on multiple projects has been a pleasure. Clear, concise, and timely communications make achieving project milestones and timelines easy. Their streamlined project team from top to bottom allow projects to be built from the ground up efficiently and without hassle. It is always a pleasure to work alongside such a great team who bring together the wider construction team and prioritise what’s best for the project.”
