THE TERRACE CARPARK

This project was undertaken for our client to provide long term carparking within the Christchurch city centre next to the popular Terraces development.

There were a number of challenges to overcome throughout the construction phase, including our inclusion in a major value engineering exercise of the design while construction was ongoing, encountering many unknown obstructions in the ground and working in close proximity to existing buildings and the busy entertainment and retail precincts. The Covid-19 lockdown occurred during construction however all parties dealt with this in an open and respectful manner. The parameters for opening areas of the building were changed on a number of occasions which we adapted to, reflecting our ability to work with the client to change objectives and requirements.

Specific elements on the build included two 14m high insitu shear walls, 800T of steelwork and approximately 4,000m3 of concrete. The design incorporated structural elements to allow for a future 8 storey building to be constructed to the front of the site and tied into this building.

Through effective communication and a close honest working relationship with all parties, we were able to ensure this challenging development was able to be controlled in terms of time, cost and to the required standards.
